Liraglutide is a long-acting analog of GLP-1 that has been developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The palmitoyl group facilitates non-covalent binding to albumin which provides a circulating reservoir for liraglutide's GLP-1 activity. Binding to albumin hinders degradation by DPP IV and neutral endopeptidase (NEP), thereby prolonging the half-life of the circulating complex.
